The area of Canonbie, Scotland is exquisitely beautiful, rural, and packed with history. Best, it is not prime tourist area! My dad and sister have been great fun as co-travellers.
And I must say that tho airplane travel is fraught with delays and the seats are uncomfortable (to say the least), the efforts to ease airport lines for people with mobility issues are Tops! Dad is just over 80 and was whisked through on a wheelchair and we got the benefits too….
These last few days have included trips to nearby environs including: the Rockcliff area our family spent much time in in 1977 (it is unchanged!), Jedburgh, Langholm, Carlisle, and lunch with a shepherdess we met in ‘77. Apparently, my ancestors were reviers, border dwellers who robbed the English and guarded the line between countries. Perhaps that’s why I feel at home here- it’s in my genes? Glad I didn’t inherit the theft thing.

We are half- way thru our trip but our plans have been upended. My sister’s mom-in-law died unexpectedly and she and dad booked a plane back today. They will drop me at the next cottage stay which is a couple hours North. I won’t have the rental car so I am going to scale back the original sightseeing plans and entertain myself as best as I can.
Putting on my big girl panties and dealing. Why is it still hard at 50?!

Such a shame the trip for your father had to be cut short too. I'll bet he enjoyed revisiting Scotland and brought back some very fond memories. Bet those 'big girl panties' fit you just fine. You can do this!
Thanks Saundra! I’m feeling more ok this evening. Dad and sister are en route home now 😞
Oh, Kimm, I'm so sorry your dad and sister had to go back so unexpectedly. I know that you'll do just fine. My daughter Nicole was a lone traveler and she thrived on it, making every minute count. Like Saundra said, your big girl panties will fit just fine. I have every confidence that you'll do just fine. I on the other hand would be at a loss to know what to do. I don't mind being by myself but I'm not like my late daughter, Nicole was. She was intrepid and full of curiosity and wanted to discover and savor every minute of her adventures. To her, every adventure was to be savored and enjoyed even when it was what I would describe as unpleasant. It was all part of the parcel.
Does this mean that the dig for fossils of old bones is off?
Hugs,
Julia
Sorry your Father had to leave you behind ...your pictures are just beautiful , great to go trace your roots ! Fascinating !!! Enjoy the rest of your trip .
Oh no! So sorry to hear about the upset of the apple cart. See, you should have brought me along....you and I could have had a time of it just the two of us. Anyway, I did not realize your father's (and, of course, your) very close connection to Scotland. Wow...I'm envious. I truly do believe I was born on the wrong continent. I think I could insert myself into any one of your stunning photos and feel completely and utterly at home. Enjoy the last week of your holiday the best you can. I know you will make the best of it. ~Robin~
What a beautiful post! Loved all of the scenery. SO sorry to hear about the death, but I am sure you will do fine. Did not realize the connection to Scotland with your dad until now. WOW how nice he was able to re-visit and my FL gets the same treatment at the airlines. He is 80 too. Janice
What a beautiful country. So were you born in Scotland? Did I miss something?
So sorry about the death in the family. I'm sure you will make the best of the situation and enjoy the rest of your stay.
The dig is still on and is in August. Thanks for your confidence Julia! I will try to emulate Nicole today. It’s a beautiful region and I do want to embrace it.
Funny how I feel so connected to Scotland. Yes, hoping to create new memories today!
In retrospect, leaving you out was the first mistake. 🥸. Heading to a small village via bus today. The castle was featured in Monty Python which hubby still quotes too often
Just sad dads visit was cut short. Now he’s saying he wants to do Dublin for Christmas. Hmmmm
When I was 7, dad did a pulpit exchange with a family from Scotland; that family moved into our house in Va., and we moved into their home in Scotland. It was magical for me
So how long were you in Scotland? That is so cool!
So dad’s a traveler and mom is not?
Still here! Ten days. I’ve packed in a lot. Mom is healthy but refuses to air travel. To be fair, she had a couple scary situations on planes. I feel badly for her as she’s love this area. Thanks for stopping by
