River Life

We’ve started life on the Nashwaak River.

The cottage is small but it suits us. Across the river is the old highway to Miramichi. Cars that traced this route for years are slow to abandon routine for the new highway. The sometimes noise is the only thing to mar our place. Perhaps the cars will eventually migrate to the Fast Route, or perhaps the noise will become background; ask me in a year if I hear it.

There are eagles across from us and in the trees behind. Bank swallows, night hawks that skim across the water late in the day, a large nest of crows a few feet away…

Hubby cleaned out the gazebo yesterday, removing winter plastic over screens, dragging cotton padding and pillows into the sun. Airing out, sweeping out. I planted the three raised beds and pulled weeds from the circular flower bed; forming borders with stone from a forgotten pile… Tomatoes, peppers, squash, peas, beans, basils, lovage, lavender, scented geranium, oregano. I murmur prayers for the plants as I go: for growth, few pests, for plenty and more to share.

This will be my summer hooking spot, it catches the breezes and blocks out the bugs, the river runs behind.

Now leaving my meanderings….

We had a superb final hooking group potluck. One in every ten has the perfect amounts of sides, mains and desserts— this was one of those!

We played Left, Right and Centre with wool strips. Two rounds. If you don’t have this easy game you must go get a set:

Each person starts with 3 of something and you lose or gain throughout the game. Winner ends up with the whole centre pile. One of us is a teacher and plays with candy, another plays with quarters, etc.

Just desserts…

I made the impossible coconut pie- remember that Bisquick recipe from so long ago?

A newbie won the second round and she was thrilled. Each left with a goodie bag of wool. Great night!!!

Next visit I will have my hooking station set up and the interior of the place in better state for photos.

Make decisions with Love as your goal. That was my reading this morning. ♥️

Great food, good fun and amazing friends - there is nothing quite like it.

I did indeed have a taste of everything! I’d say my fav was the chocolate mousse cake!

I agree. I call these kind of times my “soul feeders”

We play Right .Left & Center with my rug hooking group , instead of money , we pass old buttons around . The winner usually wins a pile of a certain color wool . It is such a fun game ! Your group looks great to be with too !!! Hooking with friends is wonderful !!!

A hooking gathering is always good!
It looks like you have found a wonderful place to call home. In no time the traffic noise will not even be noticed. I don't live that far from a railroad crossing, and it is rare I ever notice the train whistle.

It looks and sounds like you are settling in wonderfully - and getting a great deal accomplished in a short span of time. I bet the owner of the property will be amazed. What a beautifully idyllic setting. Do you hear the water moving by or is more of a slow-moving river? I just love the sound of moving water. Lovage...I had not ever heard of that before. And I thought my mum planted absolutely everything LOL. I haven't been to a good potluck in a long while - those desserts look wonderful. That would have been my first stop. ~Robin~

We each start with three 3x12” pieces of wool; depending how many play it can be quite a booty! I like your version too. Yes, we have a good good group! So grateful

Oh oh! I think it would take me a while to get used to a train. The birds are pretty loud so they’re my focus. Yes, we’re pretty content!

I have a big sweet tooth too. We grew up in a church group that was big on potlucks 🥳
Because of the week of rain, the river is swifter and you can hear it. We’re on a slower moving section of the river so no, we’d usually hear little- a fish jumping, yes.
Lovage tastes very much like celery. Dried and put into coarse salt it makes a nice addition to soups. Yum. And cheaper than real celery.

Your little paradise by the water sounds lovely and it looks like you are starting to feel right at home.

I've been planting and digging weeds all day and came in when it started to get dark. I love having my hands in the soil.

The pot-luck was absolutely fantastic. I didn't try everything but I ate so much, I was stuffed. Your coconut pie was delicious. I agree the LCR game was so much fun.
You did a good job organizing this event.
I probably won't have much time to hook this summer but I'm already looking forward to September.

Enjoy your new place.
Hugs,
Julia

Do you? It’s such a comfort food isn’t it? It’s a pretty darn nice haven. 😊

Your view is beautiful, but a shame that you can hear the traffic. I live on a side road, which was quiet, but now everyone uses it as a shortcut. The hookin sounds fun and wonderful dishes to enjoy.

Am late responding Julia! Hope your plants are growing better than some of mine. It must be all the rains. The potluck was a great night. Everything went well. I hook nothing when the temps turn hot. Like you, my hands are busier in the soil.
