Last Saturday was the hook-in in Rothesay, NB. What a great sparkling Spring day for the drive and what a sweet, big group of people! I believe the number was around 110 people. I took this mat I’m working son as a “de-wormer.” It’s 20”x 7 ft and is three panels of linen stitched together.
Below are a couple pics of mats there. I love the idea of the one hooked on snowshoes.
As you can see I didn’t take many as I was too “busy” hooking and chatting. I won a sweet hooked tool carrier bag and a sheep mug.
Because we are still adjusting from Covid days, hosts of hook-ins do not prepare and serve lunches. We bring our own but prepared muffins and cookies we’re in abundance and they were great. I don’t know the reasoning behind all this but I am sad that the days of potluck style gatherings seem behind us. Anyway… a superb day!
This coming weekend, our small guild is hosting a workshop taught by Caroline Simpson on the Value of Worms. We will be separating our worms based on values, not colours, and hooking them into a pyramid or spiral pattern. We will use our cell phones/ipads to see the grey scales of our worms! Can’t wait! I’ve been organizing this and have cookies to bake and people to contact this week.
Here are some mats I’ve come across in my volunteer work. Interesting note: when I do data entry on these into our museum system, I am told to use the word “mat” not rug. Old entries with the word “rug” are also changed over. I still struggle between the two terms.
And I can’t resist one gross snap from one of the dirtiest and moth-ridden mats I came across. I had unrolled it for a photo before putting it in the freezer and this was left on the inspection table.

Your huge runner is a STUNNDER! Great job as always.
Don't know about the why for your group's meal changes but can attest to our local liquor store which had wine tasting on Friday afternoons. Any wine purchased of the ones from the tasting were $1 off per bottle and many bottles were sold. But Covid was a great excuse for the owner to stop having the Friday tastings.
I have a Canadian reader who always refers to rugs as a "mat"; guess it is a Canadian thing. For me, I consider small pieces like a 14" or so chair pad as a mat but your stunner runner is definitely a rug in my mine.
That is going to be one LOOOONG runner. I have enough worms to make one ten times that long but that's not going to happen. Yours is going to be a masterpiece. I love hit and miss.
The hooked mat on the snowshoe is too cool. Happy a good time was had by all. I am notoriously bad at taking pictures at a hook in. I was at one on Saturday and did not take even one. Hopefully Julia will have more to share.
Ugh on what came out of that rug :-(
Your rug is looking Gorgeous and Huge !!! All the pieces at your hook in look wonderful too !!! Had to be a wonderful gathering !
Hi Kimm, I saw your big runner rug in person and it's a beauty. I love the colors.
My eyes almost fell off their sockets when I saw the moth-infested potty that was left on the table. Oh yuck!!! I wonder if I'll be the lucky one to sew the label on that one, lol...
I really enjoyed myself so much at the hook-in and got to get better aquianted with Jean McBride.
Hopefully, on Thursday, I'll be able to get up there to sew the labels on the old "mats" The water is rising and we may be surrounded by water. The only way up the road from my place is by a big tractor. Hopefully, it will all be ok. Depending on how high the water goes up, we usually bring our cars to the main road and leave them there so we can go to town.
I've taken a lot of pictures at the hook-in and uploaded them on my computer but have not had time to post them yet. Today I transplanted seedlings all afternoon and it's the first time I had time to check my email and blog.
Hugs, Julia
So nice to read your post :)
Love your "worm buster" mat....it will be beautiful when completed.
Lucky you, to gather with so many like minded folks....it always amazes me how connected we are through rug hooking. Conversations never end!
The snowshoe is a great example of how to frame things in an interesting and creative way. Thanks for sharing that photo.
Will be interested hearing about your "value" workshop and learning from your findings. What a great exercise that will be.
Cheers!!
Wowza!!! That runner of yours is AMAZING! And AMAZINGLY LOOOOOOONG! YIKES! I have only ever done one hit and miss - just a little mat probably 8x8. I think I would way overthink colors. 110 at the event is a really large turnout - I can only imagine how many wonderful rugs there were. (But I, too, would miss the potluck LOL) And ewww on that last one. Nasty. ~Robin~
I do not think I would even attempt such a big rug. I did a partial hit and miss one with a bunny in the middle. Such a large group of hookers and sad they stopped doing potlucks. Glad you stuck that one in the freezer. Gross. Janice
That is a beautiful rug and a great way to use up worms. I do love the mittens and snowshoes, a nice way to use hooking in pieces you can display, in a fun way.
Debbie
great way to use up worms but that is one big rug. Years ago in a quilt shop I bought a ruby beholder it is red plastic and if you pile wool you can see which have the same values and which stick out. Not sure where that is I might want to dig that out.
Great mats
Cathy
Kimm sheepunderfeet: Perhaps changes which continue to remain, post Covid, were over customs which were a pain or money loser for people. I’m
enjoying the “mat” I’m working on. Thanks!
It was indeed a fun day- so much creative energy in the room and it always stirs the ideas when I see the wonderful things people are doing. My runner is being worked on daily and will be put down when the hot weather hits!
A superb day indeed and we have two other hooking events coming soon before the lag of summer. Thank you!
I look forward to seeing the hook-in pics. The waters have receded and you’re busy with spring on the farm. What beautiful days we are having!
The value workshop was helpful indeed. More than anything I think it will make my backgrounds more inspired. And yes, I’ve rarely met a hooker I didn’t like! Wonderful group!
I assume you meant 8x8 inches not feet?! This hit and miss is very relaxing; I’m not overthinking what I grab to hook in.
The mat hasn’t hit the unwieldy stage yet but when it does it won’t travel with me. Our small local group does a potluck between ourselves at the end of meeting year. Easy and fun.
Yes! Seeing unusual uses of hooking helps stir my own creativity. Amazing!
I recall the ruby beholder- years ago we used it in a class on hooking. An even better way to see values is taking a picture with your cell and then looking at the photo through a grayscale filter.
