We’re across the Canadian/American border and are making our way (slowly) to NC with the rv and elderdog.
Grateful to get our second vax in New Hampshire, we limped into our rv site in Brattleboro, Vt. Exhausted. We set up and did what every true camper does- ordered the local pizza.
Today we had a bit more energy and we took turns sitting with Lucy or climbing up to the tower in the town. Built by people with mental struggles during the 19th century as a “healing project” by the “asylum.” The asylum was more progressive for the day, but an untold number of people took their lives by jumping from this tower, hence it was locked.
I said a prayer for those who built, died at, or visited the tower; a prayer for the mental struggles with which so many of us struggle.
After stopping to buy some exorbitantly priced cheese from a tourist spot, we hightailed it back to the campground for a rest and a read:
I’m really enjoying the book by Elizabeth Miller of Parris House Wool.
Her writing captures her life and lifestyle in an old home in Maine.
Recipes and rug hooking included.
And tomorrow, oh! day of days!, we get to see our daughter in person for the first time in 19 months!!!
Poor dear will be sick of us by the time we pull up in NC. Ah well.
It’s too hot to hook, so I’m not sorry I left my gear behind; but I know my hands will be twitching to create something before long...

I know you will be happy to see your daughter after almost 2 years. Safe travels. I hook winter and summer but guess I couldn't do it if there was no A/C in the sweltering temps.
So glad you got across but how did it work when the border is suppose to be closed?
Cathy
Thanks Saundra. If current circumstances don’t include ac, I am happy to skip hooking until cooler temps arrive. Last summer I got twitchy and picked up cross stitch again.
Did you go 'round to our southern border to cross?? I thought the northern border was closed.... ;-) That tower is amazing. I never would have guessed its history. I have not hooked since I pulled the last loop in my 13 stars mat. Just not sure what to pick up next....or if I should drift back to a long-neglected UFO. I bet you are excited to see your daughter...what a special reunion that will be! Safe travels! ~Robin~
Enjoy time with your daughter and all your family.
Somehow I think I would have hooking withdrawal. When we took our road trip out west, I found it so easy to hook in the SUV and hooked across America ;-)
Very cool tower.
Thanks Saundra; the ac is a must for hookers! Our daughter is with us now. We are on cloud 9!
Hi Cathy, we have both US and Canadian citizenship so we have been allowed to come and go at any time. It’s just the mandatory isolation when returning to Canada that stopped us. Canadians can fly in if they’re essential or have a damn good reason, but they can’t just drive over.
We’re American citizens so we crossed without issues. (See comment above). We’re not taking off our masks in public spaces though as we just got second vaccine. It’s all so weird and confusing. I do most of the rv driving and the mountains are challenging but so far we are safe—- if not dreadfully slow!! Thx
I get carsick too easily so if I were passenger I’d be focused on the road too. I’d love not to have to deal with that.
